Do I recommend this product?

Short Answer:

Yes, depending on hair type and hairstyle.

Pros:

  • Light hold, which increases hair manageability

  • Pleasant fragrance

  • Decent-sized bottle for the cost (currently ~$30 for 200ml)

Cons:

  • Not suited for thick, coarse hair

  • Limited texture boosting

Long Answer:

The STMNT Grooming Spray, in my opinion, falls into the category of Hair Tonic. I cover tonics in more detail here. Essentially, they are a pre-styling aid that usually helps thicken hair and improve manageability when styling.

A good tonic will leave the hair with a natural hold, nothing too heavy. Some will even help thicken the hair, giving it more body and manageability. The nature of this product type is usually not well-suited for those with thick, coarse hair, as this hair type won’t need additional thickening. Additionally, hair tonics can help give some texture and movement to the hair, but they are not specifically designed to give a highly textured finish. You will want to try other products for that effect, such as a texture/salt spray or curl cream.

The STMNT Grooming Spray checks off all the boxes of a good tonic without any real negative drawbacks outside of the natural limitations of the product type.

The fragrance is meant to be a combination of spices, lavender and woody notes [1]. As someone who is sensitive to strong fragrances, I am a big fan of the balance the STMNT Grooming Spray has been able to achieve for its scent. It is subtle and pleasant on the nose.

The bottle size is 200 ml which I find is a fair size for the typical price that it retails for (since pricing changes though, I won’t say a definitive number). I find that for most clients with short to medium length hair, a few sprays (usually 4-5 for short hair, and 6-8 for medium hair) is enough to get the benefits of this product. So when used daily in reasonable amounts, the product should last you quite a few months (though it is impossible for me to give an exact time window).

Who is this product for?

Straight to wavy, fine hair.

Short to Medium Length.

Traditional/Classic Hairstyles like side-parts, middle parts, pompadours, or quiffs.

Styled with STMNT Grooming Spray

Why?

Those with fine hair tend to experience hair that falls flat, especially after shampooing and conditioning. The STMNT Grooming Spray is an excellent product that helps give limp hair added support and structure, creating a thickening effect. Applying the product before blow-drying will help add more body and lift to the hair, even before adding any clay, paste, or pomade.

The STMNT Grooming Spray is a light-hold product that works on short to medium-length hair. Hairstyles that are much longer (roughly over 6 inches in length) may have too much natural weight from the hair, preventing the product from doing much to help with styling. At that point, thicker products like mousses or creams should be used instead.

Using the grooming spray on its own will leave your hair with a natural finish and a little hold, and depending on the desired hairstyle and natural texture, it may be all you need for your styling needs. This makes it perfect as a primer for more classic hairstyles that have a smooth, polished finish, rather than anything very textured. Again, any style that is meant to be super textured should involve the use of a texture/salt spray for the best results rather than using the grooming spray.
